LOGOA few weeks ago PCT thru-hiker Dave Collins of CleverHiker.com got in contact with me about his video series on lightweight backpacking. As soon as I began watching the first video it was apparent Dave is passionate about backpacking. Like most backpackers Dave started out with a heavy pack, over time and many trail miles Dave realized a lighter pack was the way to go. Dave traded in his heavy boots for trail runners, traditional pack for a lighter model and tent of a lightweight shelter.

Dave and the CleverHiker team have produced a quality 10-part video series on how to achieve a lightweight backpack. In the series Dave and team share their passion for lightweight backing in an easy to follow format covering topics like shelters, packs, sleep systems, essentials & first-aid, water purification and more.

Water Video Dave focuses on three philosophy points:
> You can do this – lightweight backpacking is not exclusive and does not need to be expensive.
> No perfect style – gear comes with pros and cons, choose what’s best for you.
> Don’t sweat the small stuff – focus on the big stuff, take it step-by-step, get out and have fun.

The first video covers the Lightweight Basics and how to get started the remaining nine videos cover more in depth comparisons of gear. In addition to the video series Dave compiled an e-Book of  ”Gear Recommendations” with UL and lightweight gear manufactures including web links, the e-Book is a great companion used with the videos.

Hammock ViewWhat I like about this video series is Dave doesn’t focus on brand name, model or latest uber light material specifics but stays on topic of creating a lighter pack weight so that you can enjoy backpacking more without sacrificing safety and comfort and without blowing out your finances.

Regardless of the gear you choose to carry, it’s weight of lack of, there’s no substitution for practice and experience developing and refining your skills.

So if you’re just starting to think about getting into backpacking or have already packed for a while checkout the CleverHiker video series. Even you more experienced packers may pick up a few tips on saving weight.
